What is Cranbrook Academy of Art?

When talking with prospective students, we are always asked, what is Cranbrook? Join Amy Deines, Dean, and Trisha Holt, Academic Programs Coordinator, in a conversation about the philosophy and approach of this unique graduate program in the Midwest. We will give you an understanding about how graduate study is different at the Academy and what it means to study in a truly studio-based, self-directed residential community setting. You’ll see images of our landmark campus, generous studios, equipment, work spaces and much more. And we will be sure to leave time to answer all of your questions! If you are thinking of applying, this is not to be missed.

A Day in the Life at Cranbrook – On Campus and Detroit

What is it like to study with one mentor, a leading and practicing Artist-in-Residence? What will my studio look like? What kinds of facilities are available on campus? What is Detroit like? All of these questions and more will be answered when we give you a rare glimpse into daily life of graduate studies at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Join us as we chronicle the day in the life at Cranbrook. The conversation will be accompanied by many images that show you the Academy from the student perspective as well as the many creative offerings of the surrounding city of Detroit– and we’ll leave time for you to ask questions about what it’s like to study here.

Choosing a Discipline (the Ten Departments)

Aired December 8, 2014

So… you sewed a tiger costume to wear while reciting poetry in a New Jersey accent as part of a performance piece on a stage you created in your basement. Or you trained and practiced as a traditional Blacksmith for ten years before you decided to make ceramic, fiber and metal pieces to be worn on the body. What department should you apply to at Cranbrook? Join us as we talk about the character of the Academy’s ten departments and how to choose the one that is best for you and your studio practice.
