Essay’d is a writing project that publishes essays on Detroit artists, the essays are published annually by Wayne State University Press. Jetshri Bhadviya (Photography, 2015) is from Udaipur, India and is currently based in Metro-Detroit. Being an immigrant in the United States positions her to explore the accepted ideas of identity, gender, religion and class in the East and West.

Tony Matelli (Sculpture, 1995), Duane Hanson (Sculpture, 1951), and Nick Cave (Fiber, 1989) in new exhibition at Jeffrey Deitch, New York. The exhibition “People”, is a group show of 33 figurative sculptures by 29 contemporary artists, three of which are alumni from the Art Academy.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MICH., May 11, 2018 -– Cranbrook Academy of Art is pleased to announce that Chen Li (3D Design ’18) has been awarded the 2018 Mercedes-Benz Financial Services Emerging Artist Award for Michigan. This is the thirteenth year that Mercedes-Benz Financial Services has given an Academy graduate the award.
Li was selected from among 10 finalists, one from each department at Cranbrook Academy of Art. She is a 2018 graduate of the 3D Design department.

Chris Scoates Announces Departure from Cranbrook Academy of Art and Art Museum
BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MICH., March 29, 2018 — Cranbrook Educational Community announced today that Chris Scoates has resigned as Director of Cranbrook Academy of Art and Art Museum. Scoates will stay at the Academy through the end of the academic year, after which time he will begin a new position as Director of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. It is with heavy hearts that Cranbrook mourns the loss of Julia Reyes Taubman, a staunch supporter of the arts and a member of the Cranbrook Academy of Art and Art Museum Board of Governors since 2003.
In addition to her support of Cranbrook, Taubman was a founder and Board Chairman of the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD). Spread across the disciplines of Architecture & Design, Craft, Dance, Media, Music, Theater & Performance, Traditional Arts, Visual Art, and Writing, each USA Fellow receives an unrestricted $50,000 cash award.
