Cranbrook Art Museum Presents Cranbrook: A New Domestic Landscape Features work from alumni and Artists-in-Residence

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MICH., May 8, 2017 – On May 12, Cranbrook Art Museum will open a new exhibition, Cranbrook: A New Domestic Landscape, which features contemporary furniture and furnishings by recent alumni and Artists-in-Residence of Cranbrook Academy of Art. The work challenges conventions of use, explores new materials and techniques, and blurs the boundaries between art, craft, and design. The exhibition will run from May 12, 2017 through January 14, 2018.

Liz Cohen Announces Departure from Cranbrook Academy of Art

Bloomfield Hills, Mich., April 7, 2017 – It is with heavy hearts that Cranbook mourns the passing of ceramicist John Glick (July 1, 1938—April 6, 2017). A 1962 graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art (MFA, Ceramics), Glick went on to a career of great acclaim, creating ceramic works for dignitaries and the common man, always remaining a studio potter. “You could say I am hopelessly in love with bits and pieces of the making of pots,” he once said.

Vivian Beer named Visiting Designer-in-Residence at Cranbrook Academy of Art

Featuring pieces that are the culmination of two years of studio work from a diverse group of students, visitors will see firsthand what it takes to become tomorrow’s creative leaders. The exhibition will run from April 23 through May 14, 2017, at Cranbrook Art Museum.

Cranbrook Academy of Art Named a Top Graphic Design School

Helen Ip and Christian Morin Listed as “Top Students to Watch”

Bloomfield Hills, Mich., March 24, 2017 — Graphic Design USA magazine recently published the 2017 Top Graphic Design Schools and Cranbrook Academy of Art is named to the list. The schools are listed alphabetically.

Current 2D students Helen Ip (2D ’17) and Christian Morin (2D ’17) were also named “top students to watch,” along with emerging artists from schools of art and design across the country.

Herr Creates “Snuggies for a Revolution” on Display at Elijah Wheat Showroom

Johannah Herr’s (Sculpture ’17) Snuggies for a Revolution are featured in VICE. As she says, they are “a proposition for examining our own relationship with capitalist power structures that necessitate exploitation.” Snuggies for the Revolution are on exhibit at the Elijah Wheat Showroom in Bushwick through April 30, 2017.

Ian McDonald Named Ceramics Artist-in-Residence at Cranbrook Academy of Art

Bloomfield Hills, Mich., February 22, 2017 – The Cranbrook Academy of Art Board of Governors and Christopher Scoates, the Maxine and Stuart Frankel Director of Cranbrook Academy of Art and Art Museum, announced today that Ian McDonald has been named the new Artist-in-Residence for the Academy’s Ceramics department. He will replace Anders Ruhwald, who is leaving at the end of the academic year. McDonald will begin his tenure in September of 2017.

Cranbrook Academy of Art Presents Distinguished Alumni Award to McArthur Binion

Bloomfield Hills, Mich., February 21, 2017– Cranbrook Academy of Art is pleased to announce that it will confer its 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award on Chicago-based painter McArthur Binion (Painting ’73). Binion will receive the award and participate in a public conversation at Cranbrook Art Museum with Laura Mott, Curator of Contemporary Art and Design, and local writer and educator Michael Stone-Richards, on March 7 at 7pm.

2017 Cranbrook Academy of Art Annual Scholarship Awards and Exhibition at the Detroit Artists Market

The Detroit Artists Market is proud to announce that ten graduate students from Cranbrook Academy of Art were selected as finalists for this year’s John F. Korachis Scholarship Award. Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Feb. 9, 2017 – Join Beverly Fishman, Artist-in-Residence and Head of the Painting Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art, and Academy alumnus Nick Cave (Fiber ’89), at CUE Art Foundation in New York City on February 23 for the opening of Fishman’s latest solo exhibition, Beverly Fishman: DOSE. The exhibition is curated by Cave, who says the best way to describe Fishman’s new work is “narcotic euphoria.”

Rebecca Ripple Named Interim Sculpture Artist-in-Residence at Cranbrook Academy of Art

Anthony Dunne To Deliver the 2017 Knoll Lecture in Design at Cranbrook Academy of Art

Bloomfield Hills, Mich., January 18, 2017 – On January 26 at 6pm, Cranbrook Academy of Art will welcome critically acclaimed designer and educator Anthony Dunne for this year’s annual Knoll Lecture in Design. Dunne is currently a Professor of Design and Emerging Technology and a Fellow of the Graduate Institute for Design Ethnography and Social Thought at The New School in New York. Dunne also runs the studio Dunne and Raby with his long term partner and collaborator, Fiona Raby.

Dan Kinkead Named Visiting Architect-in-Residence
Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Dec. 5, 2016 – Christopher Scoates, the Maxine and Stuart Frankel Director of Cranbrook Academy of Art and Art Museum, and the Cranbrook Academy of Art Board of Governors, announced today that Ceren Bingol has been named the interim Architect-in-Residence and Head of the Architecture Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Bingol will begin her tenure on January 6, 2017, and her position will continue through the 2016-2017 academic year. She will then stay on for the entire 2017-18 academic year.

While here, Bingol will be collaborating with Dan Kinkead, AIA, Principal, at SmithGroupJJR, during the spring 2017 semester.

Academy Alumni Named USA Fellows

Bloomfield Hills, Mich., November 18, 2016 – Cranbrook Academy of Art is pleased to announce that alumni Vivian Beer (Metalsmithing ‘04), Annabeth Rosen (Ceramics ’81) and Piper Shepard (Fiber ’88) were each named 2016 United States Artists Fellows this week. Representing nine creative disciplines, each USA Fellow receives an unrestricted $50,000 award and recognition as one of America’s most accomplished and innovative artists.

Our Spring Critical Studies and Humanities Fellow is Kristi McGuire, an artist-educator, writer and editor based in Chicago. Since 2011, she has taught in the Department of Visual and Critical Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Our Fall Critical Studies and Humanities Fellow is Alpesh Kantilal Patel, an Assistant Professor in Contemporary Art and Theory and Director of the MFA program in the Visual Arts at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MICH., March 31, 2016 – Cranbrook Academy of Art was recently ranked sixth in the nation among fine art graduate programs by U.S. News & World Report. And of all the schools ranked in the top ten, Cranbrook Academy of Art had some of the most individual program-specific rankings, with seven departments ranked in the top 20 of their program.
