Cranbrook Academy of Art Graduate Awarded Artist Residency in Berlin
BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MICH., May 12, 2017 -– Cranbrook Academy of Art is pleased to announce that Ato Ribeiro (Print Media ’17) has been awarded the “2017 Mercedes-Benz Financial Services Emerging Artist Award.” This is the twelfth year that Mercedes-Benz Financial Services has given an Academy graduate the award.
Cranbrook Art Museum Presents Cranbrook: A New Domestic Landscape Features work from alumni and Artists-in-Residence
BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MICH., May 8, 2017 – On May 12, Cranbrook Art Museum will open a new exhibition, Cranbrook: A New Domestic Landscape, which features contemporary furniture and furnishings by recent alumni and Artists-in-Residence of Cranbrook Academy of Art. The work challenges conventions of use, explores new materials and techniques, and blurs the boundaries between art, craft, and design. The exhibition will run from May 12, 2017 through January 14, 2018.

Bloomfield Hills, Mich., May 3, 2017 – Cranbrook Academy of Art announced today that Liz Cohen, Artist-in-Residence and Head of the Photography Department, will leave the Academy at the end of the 2016- 2017 academic year. Cohen notified the Academy of her decision this week.

Elliott Earls Awarded Sabbatical for Fall 2017
Bloomfield Hills, Mich., April 13, 2017 – Cranbrook Academy of Art is pleased to announce that Zack Ostrowski has been named the visiting Designer-in-Residence of the Academy’s 2D Design Department for the fall 2017 semester. Current 2D Designer-in-Residence Elliott Earls will be on sabbatical.
Bloomfield Hills, Mich., April 7, 2017 – It is with heavy hearts that Cranbook mourns the passing of ceramicist John Glick (July 1, 1938—April 6, 2017). A 1962 graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art (MFA, Ceramics), Glick went on to a career of great acclaim, creating ceramic works for dignitaries and the common man, always remaining a studio potter. “You could say I am hopelessly in love with bits and pieces of the making of pots,” he once said.

Scott Klinker Awarded Sabbatical for Fall 2017
Bloomfield Hills, Mich., March 27, 2017– Cranbrook Academy of Art is pleased to announce that award-winning furniture designer Vivian Beer has been named the visiting Designer-in-Residence for the Academy’s 3D Design department. She will stand in for current 3D Designer-in-Residence Scott Klinker while he is on sabbatical for the fall 2017 semester.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MICH., March 21, 2017 –The 2017 Graduate Degree Exhibition of Cranbrook Academy of Art opens to the public on April 23 and will showcase work from more than 60 graduating Cranbrook Academy of Art students. Featuring pieces that are the culmination of two years of studio work from a diverse group of students, visitors will see firsthand what it takes to become tomorrow’s creative leaders. The exhibition will run from April 23 through May 14, 2017, at Cranbrook Art Museum.
Helen Ip and Christian Morin Listed as “Top Students to Watch”
Bloomfield Hills, Mich., March 24, 2017 — Graphic Design USA magazine recently published the 2017 Top Graphic Design Schools and Cranbrook Academy of Art is named to the list. The schools are listed alphabetically.
Current 2D students Helen Ip (2D ’17) and Christian Morin (2D ’17) were also named “top students to watch,” along with emerging artists from schools of art and design across the country.
Bloomfield Hills, Mich., February 22, 2017 – The Cranbrook Academy of Art Board of Governors and Christopher Scoates, the Maxine and Stuart Frankel Director of Cranbrook Academy of Art and Art Museum, announced today that Ian McDonald has been named the new Artist-in-Residence for the Academy’s Ceramics department. He will replace Anders Ruhwald, who is leaving at the end of the academic year. McDonald will begin his tenure in September of 2017.
Bloomfield Hills, Mich., February 21, 2017– Cranbrook Academy of Art is pleased to announce that it will confer its 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award on Chicago-based painter McArthur Binion (Painting ’73). Binion will receive the award and participate in a public conversation at Cranbrook Art Museum with Laura Mott, Curator of Contemporary Art and Design, and local writer and educator Michael Stone-Richards, on March 7 at 7pm.

Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Feb. 9, 2017 – Join Beverly Fishman, Artist-in-Residence and Head of the Painting Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art, and Academy alumnus Nick Cave (Fiber ’89), at CUE Art Foundation in New York City on February 23 for the opening of Fishman’s latest solo exhibition, Beverly Fishman: DOSE. The exhibition is curated by Cave, who says the best way to describe Fishman’s new work is “narcotic euphoria.”
The Cranbrook Academy of Art Board of Governors and Christopher Scoates, the Maxine and Stuart Frankel Director of Cranbrook Academy of Art and Art Museum, announced today that Rebecca Ripple has been named the interim Artist-in-Residence for the Academy’s Sculpture Department. She will serve a one-year term, starting in the fall of 2017 and continuing through 2017-18 academic year.

Bloomfield Hills, Mich., January 18, 2017 – On January 26 at 6pm, Cranbrook Academy of Art will welcome critically acclaimed designer and educator Anthony Dunne for this year’s annual Knoll Lecture in Design. Dunne is currently a Professor of Design and Emerging Technology and a Fellow of the Graduate Institute for Design Ethnography and Social Thought at The New School in New York. Dunne also runs the studio Dunne and Raby with his long term partner and collaborator, Fiona Raby.
