Fumihiko Maki Designs New Sea World Culture and Art Center

Fumihiko Maki (Architecture ’53) designed the Sea World Culture and Arts Center, China’s “first major design museum” at the end of last year. It is a partnership between China Merchants Shekou Holdings (CMSK) and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Over the course of Maki’s career, he won the Wolf Prize from Israel in 1988, the Thomas Jefferson Medal in Architecture in 1990, the Gold Medal of the UIA in 1993, the Arnold Brunner Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1999, and the Praemium Imperiale from the Japan Arts Association in 1999. Harvard University awarded him the Prince of Wales Prize in Urban Design in 1993, and also in 1993, he was awarded the Pritzker Prize – often regarded as the “Nobel Prize for Architecture.”.
