This article on Detroit’s emerging, collaborative art scene features several Cranbrook alumni, as it takes a long look at what’s happening in the city today. Gary Smith, Vice President of Product Design and Exploration at Herman Miller, highlights work created through a partnership with CAA’s 3D department that looked at “Rest and Concentration in the Workplace.” Students worked for a full year developing submissions and won the 2012 Editors Award for best university submission at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair.

Ben Schonberger (Photography ’13) was shortlisted for the 2013 Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards for his self-published work, “Beautiful Pig.” The collection of photographs was taken in Detroit with and by a retired police officer. His book will be exhibited at Paris Photo at the Grand Palais and at Aperture Gallery in New York and will be profiled in issue 005 of The PhotoBook Review, Aperture’s biannual publication dedicated to the consideration of the photobook.

Ginger Dosier (Architecture ’05) Awarded First Place in the Cradle to Cradle Innovation Challenge

CAA alum Ginger Dosier was recently awarded first place in the Cradle to Cradle Innovation Challenge for her company BioMason’s CO2-free brick production process. BioMason uses bacteria to ‘grow’ bricks out of readily available materials such as sand.

Alumni Work On Display at Mercedes-Benz Financial Services

Alumni Work Featured on New Website.

The Experiencing Perspectives art program is a partnership between Mercedes-Benz Financial Services and Cranbrook Academy of Art that began in 2001, and allows graduate artwork to be displayed in the company’s Americas Headquarters in Farmington Hills, Michigan. The company recently launched a website cataloguing the artworks from current and past exhibitions. Visit the site here to see work by participating Academy graduates.

If you’re in New York this month, check out Kristin Cammermeyer’s (Painting ’12) window on view now at Bergdorf Goodman (5th Ave/58th Street, NYC). It will be up through the end of February. Cranbrook Academy of Art Graduates Receive More Than $200,000 in Grants from the Knight Foundation

This weekend, the Knight Foundation awarded $2.1 million in grants to 56 projects aimed at expanding the arts in the city of Detroit. Several of the award winners are Cranbrook Academy of Art graduates, and we are extremely proud of their success. According to the Knight Foundation, they received 1,400 applications – the most applications per capita that the nonprofit has received in the contest’s three-city, six-year history.
