This group studio crawl highlights graduates of Cranbrook Academy of Art who have built their practices in Detroit\, demonstrating how art and design is actively shaping the city’s future. Presented as part of Detroit Month of Design 2026\, this open-studio initiative moves beyond exhibition to reveal how artists and designers generate economic opportunities\, foster resilience\, and engage community through their work. \nBy opening their studios\, participating alumni connect process to impact—creating pathways for income\, collaboration\, and visibility while advancing more sustainable\, inclusive models of creative practice. \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Cody Norman
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Detroit Month of Design\, join us at deSalle Auditrorium for an artist talk by Cody Norman (MFA 3D Design 2020) followed by a conversation with Andrew Satake Blauvelt (MFA Design 1988)\, Director of Cranbrook Art Museum.   \nCody Norman is a Chicago-based artist\, designer\, and educator. He currently serves as part-time faculty in the Sculpture and Designed Objects departments at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Norman works with both digital and analog fabrication processes to transform recycled and bio plastics into functional art objects. Creating enigmatic forms that feel at once familiar and foreign\, Norman’s process physically blurs the line between digital and hand craft. \nNorman’s work is represented by I.M. Weiss Gallery and his Trace Chair has recently been acquired by the Cranbrook Art Museum where it is currently on view in the exhibition Labyrinth/Laboratory: Selections from the Cranbrook Collection. His work has shown at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House\, Chicago Botanic Garden\, and Walker Art Center. \nThe event is free with museum admission.

SUMMARY:Fine Design Book Launch and Discussion with Scott Klinker
DESCRIPTION:Join Cranbrook Art Museum and Cranbrook Academy of Art to celebrate the launch of Fine Design: A Studio Guide to Remixing Design\, Art\, Craft\, and Industry\, a publication by former Designer-in-Residence of 3D Design\, Scott Klinker (MFA Design 1996). The book is a guide to contemporary studio practice that combines instructional methods with significant student and alumni projects developed during his years at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Scott will be joined in conversation by Director of Cranbrook Art Museum\, Andrew Satake Blauvelt (MFA Design 1988)\, Nina Cho (MFA 3D Design 2015)\, and Evan Fay (MFA 3D Design 2016). \nScott Klinker designs furniture\, lighting\, and spatial systems that operate at the intersection of design\, architecture\, art\, and craft. Trained as an industrial designer\, he approaches each project through an architectural lens\, exploring how people inhabit and experience space.  \nHe has partnered with design-driven companies\, including MillerKnoll\, Alessi\, Steelcase\, Landscape Forms\, and Burton Snowboards. His industry projects have received numerous professional awards\, while his limited-edition works are represented by Playground Detroit.  \nKlinker earned an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and has held professional positions at IDEO in Palo Alto and Sony Ericsson. Before returning to Cranbrook\, he taught design for two years in Japan at the Kanazawa International Design Institute. His studio is based in Metro Detroit\, Michigan.  \nThe book signing will begin at 6pm\, and the conversation will follow at 6:30pm. Purchase an early copy of the book before its scheduled release on October 14\, while supplies last. This event is free with museum admission.

DESCRIPTION:In partnership with Cranbrook Academy of Art and Cranbrook Art Museum\, the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) presents an artist talk featuring Karyn Olivier (MFA Ceramics 2001). The talk will be introduced by MOCAD’s Co-Director and Artistic Director Jova Lynne (MFA Photography 2017). \nExhibiting a journey through Olivier’s expansive career\, the program also celebrates the impact of Cranbrook’s alumni network\, while fostering dialogue across generations of artists working in and beyond the Detroit cultural landscape.  \nKaryn Olivier creates sculptures\, installations\, and public art. Currently\, Olivier is the Public Works Artist in Residence at the Free Library of Philadelphia and will present a solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit.
