Bloomfield Hills, Mich., May 11, 2015 – Cranbrook Academy of Art is pleased to announce that the recipient of this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award is Ruth Adler Schnee. She was presented with the award at the Academy’s May 8 commencement ceremony.
The Distinguished Alumni Award is one of the highest honors bestowed by the Academy and recognizes graduates who have demonstrated creativity, innovation, leadership, and vision through their contributions to the practices of architecture, art, and design, as well as to Cranbrook Academy of Art.

Cranbrook Mourns the Passing of Tony Hepburn

Bloomfield Hills, Mich., January 8, 2015 – Cranbrook Academy of Art mourns the passing of Tony Hepburn – artist, educator and dear friend of the Academy. Hepburn served as Artist-in-Residence and head of the Ceramics Department at the Academy from 1992 through 2008.
Hepburn passed away at his home in Chicago, Illinois, on January 5, 2015.
He was a beloved mentor to many students during his tenure, as evidenced by the touching tribute crafted by Paul Kotula who represented Hepburn later in his career through his gallery, Paul Kotula Projects.

Bloomfield Hills, Mich., December 15, 2014 – Cranbrook Academy of Art has named Fabio J. Fernández (Sculpture ’02) the 2014 recipient of the Alumni Achievement Award. This is the fourth year the Academy has bestowed the award, which seeks to recognize alumni who have achieved excellence early in their career. Sonya Clark (Fiber ’95) was the first recipient in 2011, Susan York (Ceramics ’95) received the award in 2012 and Laura Heyman (Photography ’98) received the award last year.

Gerhardt Knodel Named Director Emeritus of Cranbook Academy of Art

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., Oct. 22, 2014 – The Cranbrook Educational Community Board of Trustees has named Gerhardt Knodel a Director Emeritus of Cranbook Academy of Art.
Knodel will deliver a special lecture at Cranbrook Art Museum on October 26 at 4pm. The award will be presented to Knodel at the lecture.
This marks the first time the Board of Trustees has bestowed a Director Emeritus Award.

Joseph J. Tanke Appointed Fall Critical Studies and Humanities Fellow

Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Aug. 25, 2014 – Cranbrook Academy of Art is pleased to announce the appointment of University of Hawaii, Manoa, Associate Professor and Chair of the Graduate Program in Philosophy, Joseph J. Tanke, as the Critical Studies and Humanities Fellow for the fall semester of 2014.
Tanke has published and lectured extensively on issues in aesthetics, art theory, continental philosophy, and the history of philosophy. Bloomfield Hills, Mich., July 28, 2014 – The Cranbrook Educational Community Board of Trustees announced today that after a comprehensive one-year search, Christopher Scoates has been named Director of Cranbrook Academy of Art and Art Museum. He begins his tenure August 1.
Scoates is a graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art, having received his Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography in 1986. Most recently he served as Director of the University Art Museum at California State University Long Beach, a position he has held since 2005. Three Cranbrook Academy of Art Graduates Receive Fulbright Grants

Bloomfield Hills, Mich., June 12, 2014 — Cranbrook Academy of Art announces that three recent graduates have been awarded Fulbright U.S. Student Program Grants. This brings the total number of Academy students who have received grants over the past 11 years to 25 – making the Academy, per capita, the highest producer of student Fulbright scholars in the United States. The Academy also continues to be named one of the Fulbright program’s “Top Producing Institutions” by the Institute for International Education.
