Private student and Artist-in-Residence studios are at the heart of Cranbrook Academy of Art. Where other programs assign classes and curriculum requirements, we have the studio. Where other institutions fill your calendar with teaching obligations, we have the studio. Where your professors and mentors have office hours, we have the studio.
Academy studios are quiet spaces for reflection and active spaces to engage your peers. They are spaces for figuring out next steps, making a mess or showing your work. The privacy of the individual studio is balanced with the department’s shared spaces: production facilities, critique rooms, social areas and kitchens. The peer-to-peer community at Cranbrook is evident everywhere: around the kitchen table for a meal and conversation, working side-by-side in the shop, or gathered together in critique. Students determine their own rhythms of solo time and shared time and through this, the life of the Academy is created.
