Afterhouse Supported by Murray, Daughdrill and the Ceramics Department

The Ceramics Department is taking part in a unique project with Academy alumni Abigail Murray (Ceramics ’05) and Kate Daughdrill (Print Media ’11) called Afterhouse in Detroit. The vision of the project, conceived by Murray and Steven Mankouche of the Ann Arbor, Mich.–based research and design collaborative Archolab, is to repurpose the concrete foundation of a derelict house to build a sunken greenhouse that stays warm through solar heat gain and the insulation of the earth to grow subtropical crops. Daughdrill and her Burnside Farm own the property, and our Ceramics Department is helping glaze and fire bricks that will absorb and retain the sun’s energy in the house. As of now, the department has cleaned, glazed and fired 4,000 reclaimed bricks for project. Read more about it here or follow the project on Facebook.
