Jen Catron and Paul Outlaw Sculptures on View at Brooklyn Museum

July 24th, 2019

Jen Catron (Sculpture, ’09) and Paul Outlaw’s (Sculpture, ’09) work is now on view in the Brooklyn Museum. Until recently, monuments were accepted to represent greatness and achievement. Catron and Outlaw present two monumental fountains that address tragedy and excess, reflecting a tug of war of ideologies and emotions.

The pieces reflect a surreality permeating our daily life, a mundanity punctuated with anxiety and disillusionment of the American ideal. A beautiful, excessive sugar-coated shiny object overflowing with a generous deluge of chocolate contrasts with an oversized unassuming sink, surging with corrupt water that howls for consideration. The overall scale and absurdity of the pieces encompass joy, hope, failure, and a collective anxiety of the future. They question the possibility and accessibility of the American dream and wonder who we are and where we will land.
