ArtNews Highlights McArthur Binion's Solo Exhibition "Self-Portraits" and Foundation in Detroit
ArtNews recently featured artist McArthur Binion (MFA Painting 1973) focusing on his exhibition and foundation work in Detroit.
Self-Portraits, which closed at Library Street Collective on February 22, 2023, was Binion’s first solo exhibition in Detroit in nearly twenty years. A 3D tour is still available to explore the exhibition. The new series of paintings largely focus on the use of photographs of the artist to create his characteristic layers.
Binion started the Modern Ancient Brown Foundation in 2019 to support and nurture BIPOC artists and writers in Detroit, MI. He was born in Macon, Mississippi, but his family moved to Detroit when he was four years old. Binion was raised in Detroit and gained his BFA at Wayne State University and his MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art. He views the foundation as a way to pay it forward to other artists early in their careers.
Modern Ancient Brown’s Core Program, launching in 2023, will consist of a Visiting Fellowship, a Post-Baccalaureate Artist Residency, and a collection of international BIPOC art with a resident Curator. The Fellow and Residency recipients are scheduled to be announced in April 2023.
