Andrew Thompson's First Mid-Career Retrospective on View at Stamelos Gallery Center

January 17th, 2024

Clothes Pit: Since You’re Gone, Andrew Thompson. Inkjet print, 2011.

Andrew Thompson’s (MFA Sculpture 2006)  first mid-career retrospective,  Andy T’s Urban Vision 2001-2024, is currently on view at the Stamelos Gallery Center at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The exhibition covers more than two decades of Thompson’s practice, centered on the study and the reuse of everyday commonplace materials. Visitors have the opportunity to see nearly one hundred photographs, five videos, and selected sculptures documenting his installation work since 2001.

Thompson’s sculptural assemblage works are created from discarded items like tires, used clothes, plastic bottles, supermarket bags, and junk mail. Pieces are often site-specific, taking inspiration from the immediate space and surrounding urban environment to inform the final work.

The exhibition presents four sections, Mapping Space, Social Networks, On the Move, and Activating Built Space to showcase the range of Thompson’s exploration.
