Cranbrook Artists Susan York, Anders Herwald Ruhwald Awarded 2024 Guggenheim Fellowships

April 25th, 2024

Congratulations to Cranbrook Academy of Art alum Susan York (MFA Ceramics 1995) and former Head of Ceramics, Anders Herwald Ruhwald who are among this year’s Guggenheim Fellows.

York is known for her reductive work in graphite and ceramics. Her cast and drawn forms are often installed to engage with particular spaces, creating tension with precise geometry and unexpected elements of asymmetry. Her works are in the collections of over 20 museums, foundations, and others including Brooklyn Museum (New York, USA), Lannan Foundation (Texas, New Mexico, USA), The Maxine & Stuart Frankel Foundation for Art (Michigan, USA), The Morgan Library & Museum (New York, USA), Museum für Konkrete Kunst (Germany), Museum of Art of New Mexico (New Mexico, USA), Museum Haus Konstruktiv (Switzerland), The Panza Collection (Switzerland), Queens Museum (New York, USA), Yale University, Beinecke Library (Connecticut, USA).

Ruhwald is known for his large, organic ceramic sculptures with unique glazes. His works are represented in over 25 public museum collections including The Victoria and Albert Museum (UK), Los Angeles County Art Museum (USA), The Denver Art Museum (USA), The Art Institute of Chicago (USA), The Detroit Institute of Art (USA), Philadelphia Museum of Art (USA), Musée des Arts Décoratifs (France), The National Museum (Norway), The Museum of Art and Design (Denmark), and Taipei Yingge Museum (Taiwan).

He also organizes the Danish Art Foundation Detroit Visiting Artist Fellowship which enables artists based in Denmark and Danish artists living abroad to study at Cranbrook Academy of Art and the College for Creative Studies.
