Wil Natzel Joins Institute for Public Architecture Block House Residency in NYC

September 19th, 2024

Among the new fellows of The Institute for Public Architecture’s (IPA) Block House residency is Wil Natzel (MArch Architecture 2009), a gay artist and designer.

Selected by an independent committee of design experts, the Fellows hail from a diverse range of disciplines and represent a global network of talent. Over the next eleven weeks, they will live and work together at the Block House on Governors Island in New York City, engaging in public presentations, workshops, and internal cohort activities.

Natzel’s work blurs the boundaries between art and architecture. His work includes public projects for Twin Cities Pride, Soo Visual Arts Center, and Gamut Gallery, showcased across Minneapolis and Saint Paul.

As an Artist-in-Residence with Twin Cities Pride and a recipient of numerous grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board, Forecast, and Puffin Foundation, Natzel is known for his innovative architecture exploration devices. His work has been featured in Wired, PBS MN Original, and various design platforms, and he has contributed as a visiting critic at institutions such as the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the University of Minnesota, and Iowa State University.

During his residency at the Block House, Natzel will focus on the design and development of a pop-up queer-themed architecture installation, advancing his mission to create art and architecture that challenges perception and celebrates the diversity of human experience.
