Lennart Anderson's Travelling Retrospective Marks Fifth Stop at John David Mooney Foundation

March 18th, 2025

John David Mooney Foundation International Currents Gallery in Chicago, IL is the fifth stop of Lennart Anderson’s retrospective exhibition that began touring in 2021. This major exhibition, curated since his passing, showcases 40 works spanning seven decades, including landmark pieces like Idyll III (1979-2011) and Jupiter and Antiope (2004-08).

Lennart Anderson: A Retrospective will be on view with the John David Mooney Foundation from March 27 through May 2, 2025. A special feature of this exhibition is the premiere screening of Anderson’s 1967 lecture in an adjacent gallery, offering intimate insights into Anderson’s life and work.

Described in The New York Times as one of the “most prominent and admired painters to translate figurative art into a modern idiom,” Anderson had a profound interest in formalism and an appreciation for both old and new masters, especially Edgar Degas. Hilton Kramer wrote that Anderson was a “Degas of our time.”

John David Mooney Foundation director John David Mooney notes, “When abstract expressionism dominated, Anderson quietly pursued the impressionist’s vision of capturing life’s fleeting moments, with a color palette reminiscent of early Italian masters like Ducio and Piero della Francesca.”

The retrospective is complemented by a scholarly catalogue featuring over 50 full-color reproductions and essays by distinguished art historians Martica Sawin and Jennifer Samet, and painters Susan Jane Walp and Paul Resika.

The retrospective debuted at The New York Studio School and traveled to Lyme Academy of Fine Arts, the Southern Utah Museum of Art at Southern Utah University, and The Bo Bartlett Center at Columbus State University.
