Planet Detroit Hires Photography Alumnus Ian Solomon

February 9th, 2026

Ian John Solomon.

Planet Detroit recently brought on Ian Solomon (MFA Photography 2024), Detroit-based interdisciplinary artist and Emmy Award-winning journalist, as their new Outdoors Reporter. Planet Detroit’s mission is to conduct critical reporting around Detroit to sustain healthy communities.

Solomon’s background as a native Detroiter influences his work in themes of identity, land, and ecology. Solomon’s fine art, photojournalism, and documentary production have brought visibility and perspective to the Midwest environment and access to outdoor recreation for Black and brown people.

As host of a PBS-Great Lakes Now series, Ian Outside, Solomon has won an Emmy Award and a First Place award from the Society of Professional Journalists. He is the founder of Amplify Detroit, a Detroit-based organization that amplifies Black outdoor recreation. His work has been shown in major publications, including Vogue Italia and Three-Fold Magazine. He holds a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from Arizona State University.

Solomon is one of many Academy alumni whose practices extend beyond the studio, demonstrating how artistic inquiry can take shape through journalism, community leadership, and public engagement as much as through art-making.
