Suhyung Park's Solo Exhibition at Chung Art Gallery in Seoul

Suhyung Park (MFA Painting 2016) has a solo exhibition at Chung Art Gallery in Seoul, on view August 11–30, 2026. Three Korean outlets covered the show: Art Korea TV, Geumcheon News, and mimio, which ran an in-depth studio interview by Hwang Hyu-jin.
His time at Cranbrook, and in Detroit, changed the direction of his work entirely.
“During my time studying abroad in the United States, what left the deepest impression on me was the endless expanse of grass,” Park told mimio. “Particularly in Detroit, watching grass push through the concrete of a ruined city gave me a new perspective on the power of life that persists even in places abandoned by humans.”
That image became the seed of his Grass series, now joined at Chung Art Gallery by his People series and his debut of the Space Dot series. In Grass, blades bend, tangle, and keep climbing upward against gravity. Park builds each canvas through what he calls “an accumulation of time through continuous line-drawing” — lines that vary in direction, length, thickness, and speed. Over time, the grass started to look like people to him. “Just as individual blades of grass are small and ordinary yet come together to form a landscape, I felt that people living in society are the same,” he said.
That shift led directly to People. The series began during the pandemic, as Park returned to figure work he’d left unfinished years earlier. Marriage in 2023 and the birth of his child in 2024 further reshaped his thinking. He paints crowds that read as a single mass from a distance but resolve into individuals up close. “The core of my work is the individual disappearing within a group,” he said. “I want to convey the fact that individuality exists even within a collective.”

In Space Dots, small dots fill the canvas and suggest outer space from afar. Move closer, and they resolve into grass — the same subject Park has painted for two decades, broken down into point instead of line.
Park earned his BFA at Hongik University, his MFA at Cranbrook, and later completed a PhD in art at Hongik. He now teaches the next generation of artists alongside his own studio practice.
