Writing Program

The Writing Program at Cranbrook Academy of Art has been designed as a specialized technical writing program for artists, designers, and architects through which students develop the communication skills needed to extend their studio practices beyond their master’s education and into their professional careers.

To support the subtleties of unique studio practice, students work in close, one-on-one conversations with the Writing Program Manager on each writing project, receiving individualized commentary that helps contextualize their studio practices within various theoretical and historical frameworks.

Our Writing Program aims to cultivate a public-facing language that students can use in their professional careers to apply for grants, residencies, exhibition opportunities, and job opportunities—in a word, to prepare students to communicate effectively to broader audiences the value of a vibrant studio practice.

Projects and discussions prepare MFA candidates for professional, public communication

The project sequence of the Writing Program invites students to creatively engage with various genres of writing commonly encountered throughout their fields. Students prepare, for instance, biographies, artist statements, project and critique statements, and proposals, all of which inform the drafting of their master’s statements—the capstone to the writing component of their master’s education.

In addition to the project sequence, students are invited to meet with the Writing Program Manager in one-on-one or small-group sessions to address a host of student-driven needs from creative, critical, and professional writing projects to EFL learning in terms of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

The Writing Program is open to all students.
