W Magazine recently visited Lauren Satlowski’s (MFA Painting 2013) Los Angeles studio to explore her practice and discuss her upcoming Paris exhibition.

Satlowski’s collection and organization of objects such as compact discs, perfume bottles, resin-encased flowers, dolls, and more inform her hyperrealistic paintings. She alters and adorns the objects, often creating layers of transparency with water or plastic. Her approach to trompe l’oeil still-life painting explores art history, the female figure, power dynamics, and objectification.

While studying at the Academy, Satlowski largely focused on body horror in her paintings, close-up portraits that were also altered and adorned. After graduating, she left for Los Angeles and discovered Catherine Murphy’s work, which significantly influenced Satlowski’s shift toward still life.

Amateurs of Time, Epicures of Duration, Satlowski’s solo exhibition with Galerie Micki Meng opens on October 14, 2024, and is on view through November 22, 2024.
