Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Dec. 19, 2024 – For the fall term 2024, Cranbrook Academy of Art welcomed Alberte Tranberg as the visiting Artist-in-Residence for the Academy’s Metalsmithing department. She stood in for Artist-in-Residence Iris Eichenberg while on sabbatical for the fall 2024 semester. Eichenberg will return for the spring semester.

An accomplished metal fabricator, Tranberg is a 2018 graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art’s Metalsmithing department. Her work toys with the performative nature of interior objects through gentle architectural interventions.

This semester, Tranberg led the department, managing students’ individual courses of study and curating a dynamic schedule of events and guest visits by accomplished industry professionals. Highlights included hosting artist Maria Phillips for three extended visits, participating in New York City’s Jewelry Week with the exhibition Rings/Anillos, and preparing for an iron pour casting event scheduled for early 2025. Throughout her tenure, Tranberg has worked to strengthen the department’s presence across both the craft and fine arts fields.

Tranberg’s solo exhibition A third thing. Some topping out is currently on view at the Detroit-based Matéria Gallery through December 21, 2024.

“Returning to Cranbrook as an educator has allowed me to engage with our dynamic academic community,” says Tranberg. “It’s been a humbling experience to mentor and facilitate the work of the next generation of makers, alongside such incredible and caring colleagues. As an alumna of the Academy, I am proud to contribute to the legacy of innovation, craftsmanship, and critical inquiry that defines Cranbrook and continues to inspire creative leaders around the world.”

Tranberg has exhibited works at Devening Projects in Chicago, Ill.; Ornamentum Gallery in Hudson, New York; BULK Space in Detroit; Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Denmark; amongst others and recently designed a series of award-winning handles for Reform Kitchens.

Tranberg works collaboratively with Iris Eichenberg as BERG+BERG. She also received a Fulbright Scholarship in 2016 and has been supported by numerous Danish foundations.

In 2025, Tranberg will be in residence at Penland School Craft, followed by a two-person presentation with fellow Cranbrook alumna Jova Lynne presented by Matéria Gallery.
