Meaghan Barry Publishes "Designing for Local Communities" Book with Bloomsbury

May 27th, 2025

This Thursday, May 29, 2025, Bloomsbury will publish Meaghan Barry’s (MFA 2D Design 2012) book, “Designing for Local Communities: A Guide to Freelancing and Empowering Groups in Your Neighborhood.” The book encourages readers to find their first clients within their local community. By working with small businesses, a designer can build a freelance portfolio while simultaneously investing in their neighborhood. Lessons are tailored for working with these small-scale clients, with examples, interviews, and exercises that will build a strong foundation for an independent design practice.

Barry is Partner and Creative Director at Unsold Studio, an award-winning Detroit-based branding firm. In addition to her design practice, she is Associate Professor of Graphic Design and Chair of the Department of Art, Art History, and Design at Oakland University.
