Frieze recently published an in-depth profile of Cranbrook Academy of Art alumna, Sheida Soleimani (MFA Photography 2015), titled Artist as Ghostwriter: Sheida Soleimani’s Tableaux of Care.
The piece examines her solo exhibition Panjereh at the International Center of Photography in New York, focusing on how her staged photographic tableaux address migration, exile, and the emotional landscapes of healing in the aftermath of displacement. Frieze highlights the poetic qualities and careful orchestration of Soleimani’s images, which juxtapose themes of absence, vulnerability, and collective memory.
Soleimani constructs complex visual narratives using soft sculpture, photography, collage, and installation. Her work often critiques political power and media representation, drawing on her Iranian-American identity and her early experiences growing up in a family of political refugees.
