Conrad Egyir Reimagines Detroit Piston's Letters for AfroFuture Activation

Cranbrook Academy of Art alumnus Conrad Egyir (MFA Painting 2017) was recently featured in the Detroit Pistons’ AfroFuture activation. As part of the project, Egyir reimagined the team’s iconic “PISTONS” letters with a bold design that merges African cultural motifs with Detroit’s creative energy.

Egyir’s work, known for its layered storytelling and use of cultural symbolism, brought a vibrant and celebratory presence to the event, which centered on heritage, innovation, and community. His contribution stands as a testament to the powerful role art plays in shaping public space and dialogue.

Egyir described his design, “This vibrant mural design transforms the PISTONS letters into a bold celebration of Detroit, African culture, music, and basketball. With dynamic figures, radiant color, and layered symbolism, the artwork captures the energy, pride, and unity at the heart of the city and the festival.”
