Mary Magsamen and Stephan Hillerbrand (both MFA Sculpture 1994) were recently featured in Houstonia as part of the magazine’s roundup of couples shaping Houston’s cultural landscape.

The husband-and-wife duo, known collectively as Hillerbrand + Magsamen, has built a 25-year multimedia practice that blurs the boundaries between domestic life and artistic production. Working across video, sculpture, performance, and photography, they are recognized for transforming everyday spaces—including their own home—into immersive, often humorous meditations on family life, labor, and collaboration. A recent retrospective at FotoFest surveyed the breadth of their work, tracing projects that range from backyard “spaceships” to surreal interpretations of suburban rituals.

The pair first met as Master of Fine Arts candidates in the Sculpture department at Cranbrook Academy of Art, where a spirited debate on theory and history sparked what would become both a long-term partnership and an enduring artistic collaboration. Their shared practice has evolved alongside their lives, with more recent work reflecting on the transition to empty nesters as their children leave home.

Hillerbrand + Magsamen continue to shape the city’s contemporary art scene while modeling a form of creative partnership in which studio, home, and family life intersect.
