Metalsmithing Alum Dr. matt lambert Named Programme Lead of New Masters in Silversmithing and Jewellery at The Glasgow School of Art

June 15th, 2026

Cranbrook Academy of Art alum matt lambert (MFA Metalsmithing 2014) has been appointed Programme Lead of a new one-year Master’s of Design in Silversmithing and Jewellery at The Glasgow School of Art. lambert will design and launch this entirely new postgraduate programme.

lambert is a non-binary, trans, multidisciplinary collaborator whose practice spans making, writing, curating, collaborating, and performing — what they call polydisciplinamory. Their current research investigates cruising with craft as a companion, exploring how craft’s languages and discourses can contribute to processes of equity, including decolonisation, and challenge entrenched academic structures through their margins and undercommons.

Born in Detroit and currently based in Stockholm, lambert holds a PhD in artistic practice from Konstfack University of Arts, Craft and Design; an MA in Critical Craft Theory from Warren Wilson College; and their MFA from Cranbrook. Their work is held in permanent collections at the Museum of Art and Design (New York), the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, CODA (Netherlands), and Homografiska Museet (Sweden), among others, and has been exhibited internationally at institutions including the Walker Art Center, Turner Contemporary, ArkDes, and the Benaki Museum during Athens Jewellery Week.

Speaking about the appointment, lambert reflected on what an MA can and should be:

“I approach pedagogy as part of my practice and I am looking forward to not only facilitating and tending but learning from/with students as they explore what drives their practices… I hold the perspective that an MA is a time to develop and fortify confidence in knowing what bare essentials are necessary for a practice to continue on. I am interested in how individuals define their own success and how I can best work alongside them within the experimental space of the institution to encourage failure, work through uncertainty, and to develop ethical methods to research and communicate that best suit each individual.”

The sentiment will be familiar to anyone who has experienced Cranbrook’s own model of individualised, studio-based graduate education.
