Lauren Semivan (MFA Photography 2006) Opens Solo Exhibition at Miller Art Museum

Cranbrook Academy of Art alumna Lauren Semivan (MFA Photography 2006) opens a solo exhibition at the Miller Art Museum in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, this September, as reported by Door County Pulse. Her exhibition is the September installment of the museum’s 12×12 Project, a monthly series that gives one contemporary artist a focused, 30-day solo exhibition and acquires a work into the museum’s permanent collection.
Semivan builds her photographs in the studio, working with a large-format view camera and hand-built sets. Her images layer drawing, an archive of found objects, and the human figure into constructed scenes that blur the line between document and invention. “Images are constructed in the studio through contemplative study and manipulation of a hand-built environment,” she has written of her process, describing the work as “a convergence of two scales; the physical world, and the interior world lying hidden in all things.”
Semivan was born in Detroit and earned a BA in studio art from Lawrence University before completing her MFA at Cranbrook. Her work is held in the permanent collections of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Cranbrook Art Museum, the Wriston Art Galleries at Lawrence University, Cassilhaus, and the Elton John Photography Collection. She is represented by Benrubi Gallery in New York, David Klein Gallery in Detroit, and the Portrait Society Gallery for Contemporary Art in Milwaukee.
