Joey Quiñones, Artist-in-Residence and Head of the Fiber Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art, is one of three finalists for the 2027 Envision: The Michigan Artist Initiative award. The Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design at the University of Michigan announced the shortlist on October 8, 2026, after reviewing submissions from hundreds of Michigan artists and collaboratives.
Quiñones joins finalists Mandy Cano Villalobos and Abhishek Narula. Led by the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design and Stamps Gallery, Envision is now in its fourth iteration and recognizes contemporary artists living and working in Michigan.
The three finalists will present work in an exhibition at Stamps Gallery in Ann Arbor from June 10 through July 31, 2027. Each receives an artist fee and a stipend to produce new work. The jury will select a winner to receive a $5,000 prize, announced at the opening reception on Thursday, June 17, 2027, at 6 pm. Jurors include Rehema Barber, Chief Curator at the Kalamazoo Institute of Art; Laura Mott, Chief Curator at Cranbrook Art Museum; and artist Sara Nickleson, winner of the 2025 Envision award.
Quiñones is a fiber artist, ceramicist, and mixed media sculptor. Their work focuses on African American and Caribbean history, particularly the development of queer Afro-Latine identity. Their featured works include Still Life for Black Peter, Carolina Gold, and Pay it No Mind: Reliquary for Marsha P. Johnson. Their work has been shown at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Akron Art Museum, The Shepherd in Detroit, and The Sculpture Center in Cleveland. In 2025, they also took part in Detroit Salon at Art Basel Paris. Ceramics Monthly named them a 2020 Emerging Artist. They joined Cranbrook in September 2023 as the twelfth Artist-in-Residence in Fiber.
