Applying for Federal Work Study

Federal Work-Study (FWS) is awarded to students based on financial need. Although a student may be offered a FWS award, this is not a guarantee that the student will be hired nor is it a guarantee that the student will earn the amount of the award. Students must interview and be selected for a position, and wages are earned at the rate of $13 per hour.

FWS positions are available in the Cranbrook Art Museum and in a number of departments within Cranbrook Academy of Art, including the Central Media Lab, Materials Lab/Woodshop, Library, Administration Office, Public Relations, and Advancement.

Cranbrook Academy of Art is required to employ students in early childhood literacy positions. These positions generally involve tutoring young children in area schools or after-school programs. Students interested in a FWS early childhood literacy position are encouraged to discuss their interest with the Financial Aid Manager.

Applying for a FWS position involves several steps:

  • Complete the Cranbrook Educational Community (CEC) employment application online.
  • Each application will be reviewed by CEC’s Human Resources staff; background checks will be conducted.
  • Applicants who pass screening by Human Resources will be allowed to interview for FWS positions at the Resource Fair on the first day of the fall semester.
  • Applicants who are interviewed and hired for an FWS position must attend an employee orientation, during which CEC’s human resources staff will assist students in completing the hiring process (including mandatory fingerprinting).

Students with a FWS award who do not begin working in a FWS job within the first month of the semester will have their FWS cancelled. If you find a position later in the semester, or the following spring semester, please reach out to the Financial Aid Office to seek funding.
