Student and Artist-in-Residence studio spaces are at the heart of Cranbrook Academy of Art.
Academy studios are quiet spaces for reflection and active spaces for students to engage their peers. They are spaces for figuring out next steps, making a mess, or showing one’s work. Studio space, which students have access to 24/7, is balanced with the department’s shared spaces: production facilities, critique rooms, social areas, and kitchens. The peer-to-peer community at Cranbrook is evident everywhere: around the kitchen table for a meal and conversation, working side-by-side in the shop, or gathered together in critique. Students determine their own rhythms of solo time and shared time and through this, the life of the Academy is created.
