Join Cranbrook Academy of Art in deSalle Auditorium for the Michigan premiere screening of “Out of the Picture,” an award-winning feature-length documentary about the state of art writing, criticism, and journalism. This screening is free and open to the public.

Directed by Mary Louise Schumacher, a longtime critic for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the film explores the lives and work of writers living through a period of dramatic change for both art and media. A team followed a handful of writers who have made it their life’s work to translate the experiences of art for others.

The file tracks Jen Graves through Seattle’s underground art scene and Carolina Miranda to a mountaintop “dashboard Jesus” outside Tijuana, Mexico. Follow Jeneé Osterheldt interviewing artists at the intersection where George Floyd was murdered, and explore the beginnings of Hyperallergic, Hrag Vartanian’s “blogazine.”

“Out of the Picture” will prompt conversation about the nature of art, modern life, and how meaning gets made in our time.

This film screening is supported by Professional Practices at Cranbrook Academy of Art.
