Finding Voice in Contemporary Poetry: New Forms & Discovery

Instructor: Nandi Comer

Tuesdays: 6–9pm, June 16 – July 28

In this introductory poetry workshop, students will explore how to hone their poetic voices through reading, listening, and writing contemporary poetry. Drawing inspiration from a wide range of poets working in lyric, documentary, and experimental forms, students will experiment with memory, observation, and form as tools for self-discovery and expression. The course emphasizes generative writing, discussion, and shared inquiry, creating a supportive space for writers of all stages to develop confidence, curiosity, and a poetic practice. Classes meet once per week for six weeks.

Nandi Comer served as the second Poet Laureate of the State of Michigan from 2023 to 2025. She is the author of the chapbook, American Family: A Syndrome (Finishing Line Press). Her debut poetry collection, Tapping Out (Triquarterly), won the Society of Midland Authors Award and Julie Suk Award. She has received fellowships from Cave Canem, Callaloo, Modern Ancient Brown, Mass Moca, the Academy of American Poets, among others. She currently serves as the 2025-2026 Jay C. and Ruth Halls Poetry Fellow at the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing and as a co-Director of Detroit Lit.

Queer Studies

Instructor: Jessica Suzanne Stokes

Wednesdays: 6pm–9pm, June 17 – July 29

This guided research program in queer studies will introduce you to foundational and emerging theories in this interdisciplinary field. Each week we will pair an art object with a theoretical text as we take seriously the interplay between theory and practice. We will cover topics such as normality, class, representation, performance, disability, race, gender, sexuality, nature, and embodiment. Through journaling and discussion, you will examine the impacts of queer theory on your own art practice. Finally, you will imagine future possibilities for artistic inquiry in queer studies. Classes meet once per week for six weeks.

Jessica Suzanne Stokes is a poet/performer/professor. She researches ecopoetics, queer studies, and disability studies. She focuses on method, noticing ways of making art in impossible times. She co-leads the HIVES Research Workshop and Speaker Series. Her work appears in Amodern and the forthcoming Every Place on the Map is Disabled.
