Ceren Bingol Named Interim Architect-in-Residence at Cranbrook Academy of Art

Dan Kinkead Named Visiting Architect-in-Residence

Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Dec. 5, 2016 – Christopher Scoates, the Maxine and Stuart Frankel Director of Cranbrook Academy of Art and Art Museum, and the Cranbrook Academy of Art Board of Governors, announced today that Ceren Bingol has been named the interim Architect-in-Residence and Head of the Architecture Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Bingol will begin her tenure on January 6, 2017, and her position will continue through the 2016-2017 academic year. She will then stay on for the entire 2017-18 academic year.

While here, Bingol will be collaborating with Dan Kinkead, AIA, Principal, at SmithGroupJJR, during the spring 2017 semester. Kinkead will advise students on project work based in the city of Detroit. After the spring semester, Kinkead will continue to serve in an advisory capacity.

Bingol is replacing outgoing Architect-in-Residence Bill Massie, who is leaving the Academy at the end of the fall 2016 semester.

Currently an architect based in New York City, Bingol is originally from Istanbul, Turkey. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Yale and a Master of Architecture from the Yale School of Architecture. She has held positions at Grimshaw Architects (2005-2011), where she worked on such projects as the Fulton Street Transit Center in downtown Manhattan and the Queens Museum of Art.

She was most recently a Senior Architect at OMA New York (2011-2016) where she led cultural, residential, commercial, and master planning projects, including the Marina Abramovic Institute in Hudson, New York; the competition-winning entry for Albright Knox Gallery extension in Buffalo; and she served as the Project Architect and Manager of the new Quebec National Museum of Art in Quebec City.

Her embrace of architecture as a field of active participation and interdisciplinary collaboration will help guide the practice of our current and incoming students.”

“Dan’s work with Detroit Future City highlights his strong connection to Detroit,” said Amy Green Deines, Dean of Cranbrook Academy of Art. “Additionally, Dan’s leadership regarding critical conversations surrounding the future of post-industrial cities is very important to the Department of Architecture at the Academy. We believe that Dan will help us strengthen the bridge from Cranbrook to Detroit.”

Kinkead is an architect and designer, currently working as Principal for Urban Design at SmithGroupJJR where he is also co-leader of the firm’s national urban design practice. Before joining SmithGroupJJR, he was the Founding Director and Director of Projects for Detroit Future City, an urban think-tank dedicated to Detroit’s innovative, equitable, and durable recovery. He was also Design Principal for Architecture at Hamilton Anderson Associates in Detroit and Urban Designer at Skidmore Owings & Merrill in New York.

Kinkead graduated with a Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Kentucky College of Architecture.
