Cranbrook Academy of Art at New York Design Week
3D Design Department and Academy Alumni Set to Exhibit Work
BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MICH., May 4, 2016 – The New York Design Fair opens this week, and Cranbrook Academy of Art students and several alumni will be exhibiting new work in the shows.
Our 3D Design Department is opening the exhibition Fine Design for the End of the World in the Collective Design fair, taking place from May 4-8, 2016, at Skylight Clarkson Square in West Soho, New York City.
This curated exhibition of new work by our current 3D Design students will explore how today’s most pressing challenges – such as social and economic inequalities, rampant material consumption, and environmental degradation – can become subjects for critical and poetic reflection in design objects.

The exhibition has already been widely covered by media, including Sight Unseenand Metropolis magazine, who named the show one of the “best of NYCxDESIGN.”
Zero-Craft Corp., an experimental design studio founded by Mark Dineen (3D ‘13) and Michael Neville (3D ‘14), are participating in Launch Pad at WantedDesign Manhattan from May 13-16. Launch Pad is an international exhibition platform dedicated to helping independent designers and small companies connect with manufacturers and retailers. It will take place in The Tunnel, located at the Terminal Stores at 269 11th Avenue in New York.
Featured at Launch Pad will be the “Baralaye Carafe Set,” a product designed collaboratively with current Cranbrook student Ebitenyefa Baralaye (Ceramics ‘16). This product was designed and created over the course of a series of workshops in August of 2015 at Talking Dolls Detroit, an experimental design studio run by several Academy alumni. This project has already been exhibited widely, including the recent In Series exhibition at the Toronto Offsite Design Festival and Form Ever Follows: Iterative Design Objects, an exhibition curated by alum Mark Baker (3D ‘11) at the Peter Paul Luce Gallery at Cornell College.
Also featured at Launch Pad will be Begum Cana Ozgur (3D ’13). View all of the WantedDesign projects on their website.
Finally, Aaron Blendowski’s (3D ’16) Real OK Design will be showing new slip cast planters made for the American Design Club in the Design Pavilion, 26 Astor Place, from May 7-15.
