Interdisciplinary artist Olivia Guterson Featured in SEEN Magazine
Current MFA candidate at Cranbrook Academy of Art, Olivia Guterson (Painting 2024) is featured on the cover of SEEN Magazine this month. Guterson describes art as her first language and considers her practice as a way to meditate, converse with her ancestors, and explore historic and current underrepresentation, biases, and violence toward the Black community.
Her works often include personal and symbolic objects such as glass, house paint, twine, hematite, pumice, pistachio seeds, cowries, bones, and gunmetal to create highly textured surfaces in her mixed media paintings.
“[Art] has always been a way for me to connect with community. It’s always been a way for me to show up. It’s been a way for me to give back. It’s been a way for me to make sense of the world.”
Guterson is a member of the inaugural cohort of the Modern Ancient Brown Foundation Studio Residency Program, and in 2022 she received a Playground Detroit Emerging Artist fellowship. She also received a full-tuition Gilbert Fellowship from Cranbrook Academy of Art.
