Recent Cranbrook Academy of Art alumna and interdisciplinary artist, Akea Brionne (MFA Photography 2023), opens a new solo exhibition at Library Street Collective this month. Through the work featured in Trying to Remember, Brionne explores her relationship to the loss of ancestral knowledge, and understanding one’s self through cultural awareness that has been deeply severed by colonial expansion and domination.

Brionne’s practice is centered on lens-based media and textiles, utilizing images sourced from her family’s archive and more recently, from historical movements in painting. The crafted borders of her works serve as frames, another anchor to the lens-based foundations of her practice.

Trying to Remember is on view from November 17, 2023, through January 6, 2024. An opening reception will take place on Friday, November 17 from 6-8pm.
