Lens-based artist Qualeasha Wood’s (MFA Photography 2021) latest solo exhibition, Manic Pixie, Magical Negro, was featured in The New York Times “What to See in N.Y.C. Galleries” series in both November and December 2023 online and print in November 2023.

Of the exhibition contributor Jillian Steinhauer says, “My favorite piece in the show, “System Maintenance” (2023), contains a portrait of Wood staring out at the viewer. Her head is ringed by yellow beads and computer arrows, which lead our eye to a note that lists tasks for self-care. These include taking medicine and staying off social media. “Don’t look,” Wood writes — a clever play on the fact that just below, she is looking, with an unwavering gaze. Wood brings vulnerability to her works, but what comes through most strongly is her remarkable self-possession.”

Manic Pixie, Magical Negro is currently on view through December 16, 2023, at Gallery Kendra Jayne Patrick.

Several new works by Wood will be on view at Miami Art Basel, December 8-10, 2023 with Pippy Houldsworth Gallery. Earlier this year, The Evening Standard named Wood as one of 31 “movers, shakers, and picture-makers” reinvigorating London’s art scene.
