Qualeasha Wood’s solo exhibition, code_anima, at the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts+Culture closes in just over a week on September 22, 2024. Hyperallergic recently featured the show, calling it “the artist’s more intimate performance of self to date.”

code_anima features several of Wood’s most recent digitally collaged jacquard-woven tapestries and colorful tufted hangings. Wood stated about these pieces, “This body of work draws inspiration from the concept of *deus ex machina* — a narrative device that introduces an unexpected, external force to resolve a complex situation. This device allows us to highlight the paradoxical position of Black women in society — cast simultaneously as both saviors and scapegoats within a white supremacist framework.”
