Julian Jamaal Jones is a multidisciplinary artist known for his work in textile and fiber arts, using abstraction to explore his Black identity, cultural heritage, and family legacy. He recently spoke with Create Whimsy detailing his childhood, creative inspiration, development of his practice, and more.

Inspired by his great-grandmother, Elsie, a quilter, Jones sees textiles as a connection to his past and a means to protect his narrative from societal pressures. His childhood experiences in Indianapolis, including feelings of isolation and rediscovery of his Black culture, shape his work’s themes.

Jones is also creating wearable fashion through his unisex accessory brand JULIAN. Each item is a unique 1 of 1, ensuring customers “own exclusive pieces that reflect their individuality and style.”

Jones recently participated in the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit’s (MOCAD) Annual Art Auction and Art Clvb’s Art Fair during Detroit Month of Design. In 2022, Spoonflower described Jones as an artist influencing the future of quilting.
