Chris Schanck, Clare Gatto, and Kara Güt Open New Exhibitions at MOCAD

November 15th, 2024

Three Academy alumni are opening exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) on November 22, 2024. An opening reception for MOCAD’s 2024-2025 Season will be held on November 22 from 6 to 9pm.

Detroit-based artist and designer Chris Schanck (MFA 3D Design 2011) opens a new solo exhibition. Chris Schanck: A Surreality, will showcase his latest works, “a collection of fantastic objects, sculptures, and furnishings that explore the expansive nature of science fiction, myth, and fantasy in crafting our reality.”

Image-based artists Clare Gatto (MFA Photography 2017) and Kara Güt (MFA Photography 2016) are opening their first museum collaboration, Magic Circle, centered on fantasy roleplay video game design and motifs as points of departure. The show’s title takes its name from a gaming term; ‘magic circle’ refers to the space in which the normal rules and reality of the world are suspended and replaced by the artificial reality of a game. The artists have crafted a ‘glitch in the system’ to bring forth an experiential landscape bridging digital and physical.

Both exhibitions will be on view from November 22, 2024 through February 23 2025.
