Galerie Magazine recently featured West Palm Beach-based ceramicist Kass O’Brien (MFA Photography 1990), whose nature-inspired works are admired by designers like Celerie Kemble. Influenced by childhood memories in Cape Cod and a lifelong appreciation for the natural world, O’Brien’s sculptural ceramics incorporate organic forms such as barnacles, kelp, and ginkgo leaves.
Originally from Erie, Pennsylvania, O’Brien grew up in an art-filled home and later studied at the Columbus College of Art & Design before earning an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Initially focused on photography-based collage, her artistic approach shifted after relocating to Florida, where the vibrant environment transformed her work from dark, industrial themes to bright, textured pieces.
Her ceramics career began after presenting a handmade pot to Kemble Interiors, where Kemble and Mimi Maddock McMakin recognized her talent. Over the years, she has refined her style, moving from heavy, smooth-surfaced works to lightweight, highly textured sculptures. Her inspiration often comes from nature walks and endurance races, where she collects organic materials influencing her designs.
Dedicated to craftsmanship, O’Brien shapes each piece by hand, ensuring a dynamic, tactile quality. Her goal is to create ceramics that bring joy and beauty into people’s spaces.
