Cranbrook Academy of Art alumna Brittany Nelson (MFA Photography 2011) debuts To Leave Is To Return, a site-specific project presented at Quartz Studio as part of the EXPOSED Torino Foto Festival.
The exhibition centers around a large-scale silver gelatin print derived from a still of Tarkovsky’s Solaris (1972). Hand-developed by Nelson using 19th-century photographic techniques and experimental chemistry, the image blurs the boundary between memory and material—appearing both fragile and otherworldly. Thematically rooted in science fiction, the work reflects Nelson’s ongoing exploration of isolation, queer identity, and the unknown.
Based in New York, Nelson is currently an Artist in Residence at the SETI Institute and is represented by Patron Gallery, Chicago.
