Mike Daines Named One of The Design Kids Top Lecturers in 2023
Mike Daines (MFA 2D Design 2009) was named as one of The Design Kids Top Lecturers of 2023. Daines is currently a graphic design professor at Utah State University in their Art + Design department, where he has taught for nearly eleven years. The Design Kids is an organization based in Sydney and New York that recognizes top design students and emerging artists. This is the first year they have included the top educators award.
In Utah State University’s (USU) announcement of the award, Daines describes how he initially began teaching in the Metro-Detroit area after studying at Cranbrook. “It was common for design schools in the Detroit area to hire Cranbrook graduate students to teach in their departments,” Daines told USU.
A few years later, while working in LA, Daines received news that one of his former professors at USU, Alan Hashimoto, had passed away. Reflecting on his time in undergrad, Daines decided to return to his roots in Utah and was hired into USU’s Art + Design department.
Of returning he said, “I’m a product of this program, and it has been exciting to bring back the knowledge and experiences I’ve gained to continue to build upon its success.”
Daines has previously taught at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, and the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture.
