Buffalo Prescott's Inaugural Artists-in-Residence Are Academy Alumni

September 16th, 2024

Samara Furlong, founder of Buffalo Prescott.

The inaugural cohort of artist residents at Buffalo Prescott includes Olivia Guterson (MFA Painting 2024), Shaina Kasztelan (MFA Painting 2024), Evan Mazellan (MFA Painting 2024), Sara Nickleson (MFA Painting 2024), and Rachel Elise Thomas (MFA Photography 2024).

Buffalo Prescott, founded by Samara Furlong, is a nonprofit art hub promoting community, family-friendly spaces, and work-life balance. Artists-in-Residence are welcome to bring their children to individual studios and community areas at Buffalo Prescott, which is still unusual at many residencies. Two of the current residents have young children.

All 2024 MFA graduates, the residents have the opportunity to work through the “post-graduation gap” together. Many artists experience a loss of community, critique, or other resources after leaving art school. To meet these needs for mentorship and feedback, Buffalo Prescott partnered with Independent Curators International to bring in curators for studio visits and critiques. Other artists are also invited to participate in programming with the residents and community members.

Furlong currently sits on the Cranbrook Academy of Art and Crabrook Art Museum Board of Governors and is a member of the Cranbrook Art Museum Committee.
