Brittany Nelson’s (MFA Photography 2011) two-person exhibition with Joanne Leonard is featured in The New York Times’ recommendations for art shows to visit in September of 2024 in New York City.

Nelson’s photographs from the show were created while she was in residency at the SETI Institute, an organization that is dedicated to searching for life in the universe. Nelson used a medium format camera and a hand-held light source to photograph the 42 antennas that make up the SETI’s telescope array.

Outer space becomes a metaphor for queerness in Nelson’s work, exploring isolation and the human need for connection.

Joanne Leonard & Brittany Nelson is on view through October 19, 2024, at Luhring Augustine in Manhattan.
