Fondation Cartier Celebrates 40th Anniversary with Massive Olga de Amaral Retrospective
The Fondation Cartier pour l’art Contemporain in Paris, France is celebrating its 40th anniversary and 2025 relocation with a major retrospective exhibition of Colombian artists and Cranbrook Academy of Art alumna Olga de Amaral. 90 works are featured, including many being shown outside Colombia for the first time.
Amaral is an influential figure in the movement to elevate traditional weaving techniques among artists like Sheila Hicks, Elsi Giauque, Aurelia Munoz, Magdalena Abakanowicz and Jagoda Buic.
Amaral studied in Cranbrook Academy of Art’s Fiber department from 1954-55, when it was common for students to stay for one year without getting their degree. She was awarded an honorary Master of Fine Arts degree from the Academy in 2022, after her traveling retrospective, Olga de Amaral: To Weave a Rock was presented at Cranbrook Art Museum.
Olga de Amaral at Fondation Cartier is on view through March 16, 2024.
