Satoru Nihei’s (MFA 2D Design 2011) poster series Emotional Geometries has received a Golden Bee Global Award in the Cyrillic Space category at the 17th Golden Bee Global Biennale of Graphic Design. The 2026 biennale received more than 17,000 poster and screen-based submissions from 70 countries.Awarded works were also exhibited as part of the biennale’s Cyrillic Space exhibition.
Established in Moscow in 1992, Golden Bee is one of the longest-running and most respected international biennales dedicated to poster and graphic design. Over its more than three-decade history, it has become a significant platform for showcasing innovative graphic design from around the world.
Emotional Geometries began as a series of seven posters and grew to ten. In these posters, Nihei treats Cyrillic letterforms as abstract, almost sculptural elements, using geometric shapes, bold color, and dynamic compositions to explore what typography can express beyond its linguistic function.
The award continues a long relationship with the biennale. Nihei received Golden Bee awards in 2022 and 2024, and three of his posters were selected for the final exhibition of the 12th Golden Bee in 2016. Born and raised in Fukushima, Japan, and now practicing in the United States, he makes work that explores personal and emotional experience through typographic form, in a manner that is expressive, contemplative, whimsical, and often playful.
In a 2025 essay for Design Observer, “On Darkness, Doubt, and Design: Finding Light in the Act of Making,” Nihei wrote about how immersing himself in making work, beginning with a single poster designed without rules or preconceived notions, changed his course as a designer.
Nihei’s work has been featured in The Tokyo TDC Design Annual, METROPOLIS, Graphic Design: The New Basics, and among others. Internationally, his designs have been showcased at major exhibitions, including the Peru Design Biennial, Graphic Matters, Trnava Poster Triennial, and the Shenzhen International Poster Festival. He is ahttps://2026.goldenbee.org/en/ former judge for PRINT Magazine’s Regional Design Awards.
