Scott Klinker, Head of 3D Design at Cranbrook, Featured on Scratching the Surface Podcast

April 27th, 2023

Scott Klinker, Head of 3D Design and Designer-in-Residence at Cranbrook Academy of Art, was recently interviewed by Jarett Fuller for Scratching the Surface podcast. Klinker’s interview follows up on Scratching the Surface’s interviews with former Heads of Design, Katherine and Michael McCoy.

Klinker discusses the transdisciplinary nature of the Academy, and how he views the definitions of seemingly similar programs, 3D Design, Sculpture, and Architecture. He also details the nature of study in 3D Design and what type of students he works with in our exclusively graduate-level program. Klinker describes how each year’s cohort is crafted to provide a unique balance and rich conversation among the students, which may include industrial designers, craftspeople, artists, and others. There is often a focus on exploration and invention with materials to come up with new ways of making, versus pursuing a singular process or material.

Klinker and Fuller also delve into his personal views on design education, and what makes ‘good design.’ Fuller is also an educator, together they explore the difference in educational style at Cranbrook, which is known for not having a traditional class and assignment structure. Klinker explores how he addresses this change with students and how it benefits those looking to develop independent, professional practices.

All Artists-in-Residence maintain their own professional practices, and Klinker explores some of his recent projects, including his public seating with Landscape Forms, and how his interaction with students as a mentor influences his practice.
